ETICA

Adelaide's Ethical Pizzeria and most importantly Adelaide's FIRST Mozzarella Bar!!

The power of Facebook has led to me finding Adelaide’s ONLY Mozzarella Bar and my new FAVOURITE Pizzeria – ETICA!

Etica, which translates to Ethics in Italian, is a new Italian eatery who has chosen to run their business the right way – Ethically. Located in Gilles Street, just off of Pultney Street in the city, the small bar’s style is quite organic and natural from the rustic pine chairs and tables, lavender flowers in small antique vases and for me the most beautiful feature of the bar was the beautifully tiled wood oven pizza. Having the oven placed in the middle of the bar makes guests feel immersed in the cooking experience, plus the smells of the oven take me back to Italy.

Above all, the small tiled picture of St. Francis tiled in the side of the oven is so special to me, it shows me that Pizza maker Federico believes in the protection by patron saints, as do many Italians, like myself.

Getting to the most important part... THE FOOD! The food is delicious – there is no doubt about that but the even better part is that every ingredient on their menu containing an animal derived product comes from a real farm that practices the highest animal welfare stands in Australia.

Getting back to the taste – I know I say it a lot BUT OH MY GOD! For the couple of hours that I was at Etica I thought I was in a little pizzeria in Benevento. From the smells, the tastes, the plates - everything was authentic and the CHEESE... Oh the CHEESE!!!! I love cheese more than life it’s self and every time I land in Rome and drive the three hours down to Benevento I stop at a little town along the way to pick up cheese. Not just normal cheese but Mozzarella di Bufala and when I noticed that it was on their menu I was eager to try it out.

The Mozzarella di Bufala was beautifully presented in a tegamina bowl on a bed of red lettuce lightly dressed with a few organic olives. The slight sourness of the olives was gladly meet with the vingarette in the salad and the creaminess of the magnificent mozzarella.

We shared an Antipasto Misto that included every marinated vegetable I adore plus there was a piece of Ricotta di Bufala.

Having given up bread, pasta and pizza for lent I couldn’t eat bread along with the antipasto BUT beyond that I couldn’t clean my plate, which I told my cousins they had to do on my behalf.

Because I hadn’t had enough cheese already I ordered an insalata caprese – organic roma tomatoes, sliced Mozzarella di Bufala, organic extra virgin olive oil and home grown basil. OHHHHHHHHH I could live on these simple ingredients every day of my life.

Well... it has only been a day and I am already thinking of when I will return – especially after Easter and Lent is over when I can indulge in that amazing pizza.

I can’t recommend this gorgeous bottega strong enough – Call out to all - try this place before it is booked out for months – on its first Saturday night opened they had to already turn people away.

GET IN QUICK!!!! VELOCE VELOCE VELOCE!!!

  1. Went there last night. Very spartan, very authentic, very wonderful. Simple and fresh food. The salad was amazing, definitely picked the same day. I could easily get into the habit of dropping by on my way home from work.

  2. Have reviewed many of places in Adelaide for several media publications however this has proved to be the most overrated and disappointing establishment by far this year. Upon arrival everything had seemed fine, the owner, who lives upstairs, had introduced himself and explained the menu and where he sources his ingredients. Having spruked his establishment to the hilt, we were prepared to sit through something unique. My accomplice ordered the Pesto Fettuccine and i had ordered the Salame pizza, both of which dishes had been recommended highly. The worst experience was when i chipped a tooth on an olive pip, the waitress simply laughed it off and said "oops, i must've forgot one" whereas as the proprietor was more interested that i don't make an issue of it in front of other patrons, more interested in hushing me out of the door. The pesto fettuccine was not seasoned at all to taste and the basil used in the pesto was picked way too immature which resulted in a grassy taste. Overall, if you are looking for a mouzarella bar in Adelaide i would strongly recommend Pizza e Mozzarella Bar on Pirie Street, Etica haven't obviously done the ground work to warrant a visit, unprofessional reaction to such an important health issue only goes to show they have a long way to go.
