FASHION POLICE - BAFTAs & THE GRAMMY AWARDS

Sunday, February 10 was a very busy evening in both London and Los Angeles as scheduling went array with both the Grammy Awards and the BAFTAs were held on the same night…
Let’s start with the Baftas - The British Acadamy of Film and Theatre Awards are always damned with freezing cold weather, and this year was no different as many starlets carried brolleys.

From best to worst - here goes...

Another Femme of Dior, Marion Cotillard faced the cold in this sunshine yellow Couture creation. The billowing drape and peek of skin brought happiness and smiles to the red carpet = 9/10

I was a bit jealous of Amy Adams, as she wore my favourite Elie Saab gown from the A/W 2012 collection. Love, love, love the choice. The Chantilly lace and exquisite beading is what Elie Saab is all about = 9/10

Jessica Chastain was a vision in this sapphire blue Roland Mouret. The asymmetrical gown was fit impeccably to her body as were the Harry Winston sapphire jewels. Couldn’t miss them! WOW! = 8/10

The Olsen’s are known to be risk-takers, so no surprise youngest sister Elizabeth Olsen rocked a black-and-white Chanel Couture gown with tiered ruffles = 8/10

Jennifer Lawrence again wore Dior Couture, as their newest face, but really what a chore that would be. Like really so hard. Once she removed her dark coat, her strapless pink gown was very lady like with stunning cascading stones = 8/10

Anne Hathaway appropriately chose British designer, Burberry. The black gown is nice but I don’t understand why she continues to wear column gowns which elongate her silhouette, considering she is already quite thin. Mind you I LOVE her hair. It looks BEYOND BRILLIANT = 7/10

Sarah Jessica Parker was just as disappointing as Beyonce in this Elie Saab jumpsuit. Like why…?! Why…?! Why would you wear a jumpsuit to a MAJOR red carpet, especially during an A/W Fashion Week season. I expected a lot more from this fashionista = 4/10

Dame Helen Mirren tried to join popettes Katy Perry and Kelly Osbourne with her lavender locks, but somehow she looked elderly with the purple rinse. The wrong choices continued with the long-sleeve gown Nicholas Oakwell white confusion – WTF = 3/10

NOW... The Grammy Awards...

While at the Staples Centre in downtown LA the music industry came to play as the biggest music gongs were handed out… A memo was sent to all stylists, advising them not to show too much puffy skin, which meant no cleavage and no hoohah!! Many stars abided by the rules but a few cheeky ladies pushed the barriers of the memo… Here goes – from best to worst…!

Roaring in Red = Red Hot Rihanna. The Barbados Babe was BEYOND stunning in this sophisticated candy-apple-coloured, custom dress by Azzedine Alaia. The A-line design was a change for Ri Ri as she looked more like a lady in this design, even though the cris-cross detail was a tad see-through. Apparently you could see her nipple ring but I missed it completely… This woman was a hot mama… and that hair AMAZING… I want that hair now = 10/10

Florence Welch is a style setter; she’s gorgeous in her dramatic style and stayed very much on trend with the emerald green Givenchy look. The custom gown was a modified version from the Givenchy Fall 2009 Couture collection. The exaggerated stud trend was rock chic/alien like but somehow she made it look fashion forward. Being constructed completely of sequins gave the dress great movement, also that thigh high split showed enough skin considering the high neck and long sleeves. Florence followed through with the Givenchy stilettos and clutch, all in Pantone’s recommended Emerald = 9/10

Adele is Adele, she isn’t stick thin, she isn’t sample size but she has her own style. I appreciate Adele wearing a colour other than like usual and a print is refreshing for Spring. Then really can you really go wrong in Valentino = 8/10

Roberto Cavalli may not have appeared himself on the red carpet but his gowns owned the floor as Miranda Lambert looked VAVAVOOOOOOM in this sexy black gown = 8/10

Katy Perry turned quite a few heads in this embellished keyhole (breast exposing) neckline Gucci gown. Katy also kept on trend with green, but with a lighter shade of mint green. The gown was skin-tight and Katy does have an amazing body to rock the tightness, but the gown looked classier on the model with less cleavage. Katy obviously ignored the memo = 7/10

Nicole Kidman tried to step back from the spotlight, as the date to her superstar husband Keith Urban. The gorgeous Aussie was quite demure in a gold Vera Wang full length gown. I think she is a bit stuck in these sleeveless statuesque gowns, having worn them at the Sags, Golden Globes and again at the Grammys. She didn’t stand out and the gown was forgettable, but all I hope is she chooses a different silhouette at the Oscars next weekend… P.S. Black shoes was a bad choice = 6/10

Kelly Rowland ignored the memo also, and even though she has a rocking body I felt a bit awkward when I looked at her in this Georges Chakra black gown. All the lines in her dress pointed directly to her private bits, and I found that quite foul. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the razor sharp cutouts and technique in assembling such a dress, but if there was a darker lining perhaps it wouldn’t have been so offensive = 6/10

Carrie Underwood also chose the Italian stilista for a breathtaking gown which had intricately worked lace. I loved the dress but I wish she didn’t accept the old fashioned bling, it aged her entire look = 6/10 (because of the bad jewels not because of the RC gown)

Taylor Swift was going for a Greek goddess-like look, and to be honest she didn’t look bad in J. Mendel but I am sick of her looking like a ‘goody-toe-shoes’. Apparently she has had a lot of boyfriends but she looks so demure all the time. I really want to see her look sexier, look more like a woman. I am a bit bored of her braided hair too… I’m just BLAH about this look = 6/10

Following in the heels of Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert, Carly Rae also wore a Roberto Cavalli dress for the evening. The dress was beautiful but the look was ruinied with her immature make up and hair =6/10

TWO WORDS - Beyoncé disappointed. Whilst the Grammys is the chance to be fashion forward and take risks, I felt like Beyoncé was lazy in this Osman jumpsuit. The graphic lines were strong and on trend but it wasn’t glam, it wasn’t the most flattering option and it wasn’t worthy of being alongside the Givenchy gowns on the night = 5/10

Jennifer Lopez had one of the most memorable Grammy fashion moments in the plunging Versace but I would rather forget this Anthony Vaccarello asymmetrical gown. It was “a little shoulder and a little toooooo much leg,” as JLo nearly flashed her Vajayjay a few times and tried to cover it up with her Jimmy Choo clutch. That Angelina Jolie leg thrust was OTT and I would have preferred less intense hair. It was ‘really’ pulled back, like wow, she doesn’t need an eye lift with that pull back = 5/10

You would think if Faith Hill chose a little black dress she would be safe but…oh no she wasn’t. The J. Mendel cocktail dress cut her off just above the knees and the beaded necklace collar, sheer bodice, confetti-like sequins, and sweetheart neckline made the top of her dress too much to look at. No more words just a = 4/10
Can't wait for the Oscars... ohhh... Hurry up Feb 25...

Ciao! Luciana xoxo

FASHION POLICE - 2013 SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS

Amanda Seyfried certainly looked like a lead actress in this dark midnight-blue hue. Amanda’s Zac Posen Pre-Fall 2013 stunner was unlike anything else seen at the SAGS. The fitted design cascaded with tiered layers, which forged into a fabulous trail behind her. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! LOVE THE COLOUR, LOVE THE STRUCTURE, LOVE THE CHOICE!!! BEST DRESSED = 10/10

Nicole Kidman is moving up the fashion stakes in leaps and bounds as shocked me in this beautiful Vivienne Westwood Couture midnight blue gown. Covered in floral appliqués, the stunning creation also featured a thigh-high slit. Even though some may say Nicole is wearing a different version of the same sleeveless column gown, this is one of my favourite. Nic looked so fresh faced with her perfect make-up and sleek straight hair. Love the complete look = 9/10

Anne Hathaway just keeps getting better and better. Best of all she knows how to time the appropriateness of her gowns. This stunning black tulle Giambattisa Valli Couture gown came right off the runway from Paris this week, and made the ‘Les Miserables’ actress look  pretty without being too girlie, and sophisticated and polished without being mature = 9/10

Jennifer Garner certainly stole the spotlight from her award winning husband Ben Affleck. The actress turned up the glamour on the red carpet, wearing a gold intricately embroidered strapless Oscar de la Renta gown = 9/10

You would not have known Marion Cotillard was sick, as the brand ambassador for Christian Dior was radiant in this ball gown. The flash of the white strapless bodice, which was contrasted with midnight-blue satin skirt and tied sash, in my eyes was magnificent. Even though the coral runway version was a little younger, I think the navy worked nicely for Marion = 9/10

Naomi Watts is just getting better and better in the fashion stakes, she was a vision in the perfect Marchesa strapless gown with silver metallic embroidery and crystal embellishments = 9/10

Modern Family’ starlet Sarah Hyland was a vision in violet in a strapless, purple Dolce & Gabbana gown rendered in an abstractly printed fabric. Rarely do you see print on a red carpet, let alone a print done welL = 8 ½ /10

Nina Dobrev popped in this hot-pink Elie Saab gown… She looked flawless in this sleek number, which include some subtle sexy cutouts and a monochromatic thin belt = 8/10

Claire Danes again rocked her BEYOND amazing post-baby body in a one-shouldered black and white Givenchy gown. The asymmetrical art deco-inspired embellishment down the side from hip to hemline took the gown from cute to Couture = 8/10

Fellow Dior ambassador Jennifer Lawrence wore more recent Christian Dior design, as her midnight blue Couture gown featured on the Paris runway just days ago. Jennifer’s was slightly altered to be wider around the bottom of the legs, with the addition of the train also… You would think this would make it easier for her to walk in, but as she got up to accept her award she did struggle… All the same, I loved the choice… So stunning… It is quite obvious that ‘midnight blue’ is the colour of choice for the evening = 8/10

Lea Michele looks every bit the fashionista in this fashion forward Valentino gown. I love how she carried this beautiful creation of art. I was very glad we didn’t get a flash of her leg in the usual thigh-high slit she chooses but I would have preferred her to get rid of her two toned hair… A full brunette look would have made this look complete = 8/10

Jessica Chastain kept to the theme of colour from the Golden Globes with this red Alexander McQueen gown. The sweetheart neckline gave her a sexy silhouette, but what topped off her glamorous classic look with Harry Winston jewels = 7.5/10

Naya Rivera opted for a Donna Karan Atelier design that showed off her figure with a mermaid silhouette and peekaboo sheer panel. The gown featured also beautifully delicate silk pleats = 7/10

Julianne Moore wore Chanel Couture Fall 2011 gown which I barely recognised. The plunging neckline was something I certainly didn’t remember from the runway, and the thick silk kept folding forward awkwardly. I remembered the adorable sweet floral appliqués at the bottom and that was my favourite part of look = 5/10

January Jones took a HUGE risk with this black and white Prabal Gurung look. The shorter cocktail-style dress was transformed from its original runway look with the addition of a longer skirt – but to tell you the truth I preferred the shorter look. I know she was trying to follow the formality of the SAGS but she is young, she is fashion forward, she could have carried it off perfectly. The addition of length, together with the napkin-like neckline and pompous hair made her look so old
= 4/10

Julianna Margulies strutted in wearing a two-toned Chado Ralph Rucci dress. The alternating colours of the bodice, skirt and hemline, was a huge fashion risks as it wasn’t the most flattering or age appropriate. The beehive hairstyle didn’t work either = 3/10

Rose Byrne, my dear aussie friend, WTF… I love Valentino, I love his florals and his ruffles but not for an awards show like the SAGS. Oh hunny, why…?! The print is too big, the look is to day time, and you are attending an award show where actors are recognising fellow actors. This look makes me take her less serious… Majorly disappointed = 2/10 – The two is only because it is Valentino and I love VALE but oh so not right for the SAGS.

All in all, this read carpet was more fashion forward than the Golden Globes and not as glam as the Oscars will be but it was ohh soo gorgeous... Only a few more weeks and the biggest carpet of the all will be on offer...

A dopo... Luciana xoxo
