DAY THREE - PARIS

VALENTINO

Backstage at Valentino the mood was set early as the models were instructed to be “luminous”, “serene”, “couture”, “You all look gorgeous”. The attitude rang true when the time came for them to step onto the catwalk to present Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli’s Valentino couture vision. The models looked angelic and radiant as if they were floating.

“Those two just keep going from strength to strength,” said Vogue UK fashion director Lucinda Chambers of the designers who took the helm of the legendary label three years ago, following the retirement of Mr Valentino and a brief rein by Alessandra Facchinetti in 2007 -2008.

“Beautiful; It was very simple, sheer, incredibly light and embroidered, the girls were almost walking naked. They had incredibly fine gold in their hair and on the top lip. It was romantic, medieval and pared-down to give it newness,” continued Chambers.

The show notes told the fashionistas “sartorial savoir-faire is now a private and personal indulgence. Opulence is transformed in a private dimension far from indiscreet eyes. Evocation has replaced urgent definition”.

The delicate appliqué on the fine chiffon and suede displayed the highest quality craftsmanship and the inclusion of the heavier silks and suedes infused a sense of warmth into the Autumn/Winter collection. Chiuri and Piccioli’s combination of structured coats and sheer gowns was the greatest contradiction of textures but magically it was BEYOND PERFECT!

“We’re seeing a new elegant, slim silhouette, it’s very ravishing and feminine,” pointed out Chambers, noting the strongest shows of couture week have all been sheer and with a muted grandeur about them.

The chiffon bow tied at the neck was the most beautiful accessory of the week as it was nearly perfectly reminiscent of the femineity that Valentino is renowned for.  Another renowned show stopper that Valentino is famous for is “The Red Dress” and this season only two appeared on the catwalk but they certainly made their mark.

Finally, the Valentino bridal couture finale dress was magnificent and demure, as the long sleeves and boxed shoulders were modest but the gold appliqué on the sheerest chiffon was very royal.

To be honest when Valentino decided to step down I was petrified that it was the end of an era but thankfully the legend lives on...

Elie Saab

Angels floated down the runway at the Elie Saab Haute Couture show at the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris. An ethereal glow was cast upon the stage, as magnificent gowns illuminated the entire room creating a gleaming dream. The models looked effortless with their softly swept back hair and adorned in encrusted jewel-like wings that shimmered in the light.

Similar to a parade of ballerinas, Elie Saab celebrated innocence and femininity with beautiful lace, tulle, silk chiffon and his signature beading. The whimsical dresses, fluid lines and beautiful tailoring were breathtaking. Fresh and flirty silhouettes mixed with exquisite embroidery revealed a regal yet lighthearted style. Even though the majority of the gowns were the sheerest of the season they maintained a demure sexiness.
The autumn palette included shades of aquamarine, blush, slate blue, brown and bronze. As the goddess-like models glided down the runway, the light captured the sheer elegance of each gown.

The grand finale showcased a BEYOND BEAUTIFUL wedding dress fit for modern royalty – but – honestly the majority of the collection could be consider bridal couture.

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER

In dramatic fashion, Jean Paul Gaultier’s models – both men and women - strutted down the catwalk in an Autumn/Winter Haute Couture collection like no other on Wednesday night. Quite appropriately embellished for any lavish occasion, this collection flaunted a stylish array of both wearable daily designs and the epitome of couture gowns.

There is nothing subtle about the alluring glamour of Jean Paul Gaultier, and as always true to form, the designer’s newest collection is nothing short of luxurious grandeur at its finest. FLF = Feathers, Leather and Fur were the most used materials throughout the artistic collection.

The androgynous look was evident as double breasted coats, exaggerated suits, over sized waist coats were carried well by the women whilst the male models took on a fierce metrosexual look as they donned corsets, trains and an abundance of feathers.

My favourite look on the night was the mustard green silk trench coat that floated across the catwalk - but the sad thing is this is the only collection that has summoned me to choosing the worst look - a medieval orange gown with numerous splits just didn’t connect with the remainder of the collection. You win some you lose some...

Paris gave us more than what we bargained for – in a good way – and now it is time to say au revoir to the French capital...
Till we meet again...
Bacio!
